Upon admission to upper-division, all students will have a hold on their records. The hold will prevent them from registering for the next semester of classes.
IMPORTANT: Departmental holds are not removed from students' records until they graduate or leave the program. Instead, holds are "pushed forward" so that students may register for the semesters of coursework that have been approved by their advisor(s).
In order to have their holds pushed forward so that they may register for the junior and senior years of coursework, students must complete the steps outlined below.
To register for the junior year of coursework, students must:
Fill out the Course Schedule Planning Worksheet, including all courses to be taken during the next two semesters.
Submit the completed worksheet to the Undergraduate Program Assistant and Advisor in 7-105 Hasselmo Hall, or at bmedus@umn.edu.
When the worksheet has been approved, the student will be notified that the hold has been pushed forward, and that s/he may register for classes.
A one-on-one meeting with the Director of Undergraduate Studies is only necessary at this stage if a student is deviating significantly from the junior curriculum as outlined on the four year plan (e.g., students who were admitted to upper-division for spring semester, transfer students, or students who plan to study abroad).
Students' holds will prevent them from registering for the senior year of coursework. To have their holds pushed forward so that they may register, students must:
Choose an Emphasis Area.
Fill out the Engineering and Science Elective (ESE) Planning Worksheet (pre-med students should complete the Pre-Med ESE Planning Worksheet; students currently enrolled in the Combined Degree Program must complete the Combined BBmE/MS ESE Planning Worksheet).
Meet with the appropriate Emphasis Area Advisor to have the worksheet approved.
Submit the worksheet to the Undergraduate Program Assistant and Advisor in 7-105 Hasselmo Hall.
When the worksheet has been given final approval by the Director of Undergraduate Studies, the student will be notified that the hold has been pushed forward, and that s/he may register for classes.
Only after the Biomedical Engineering degree has been conferred will the departmental hold be removed from the student's record.
